This phase which was officially launched today, April 14, 2025, the initiative has been widely celebrated online, with the hashtag #ContactlessInUS trending shortly after the announcement.
This milestone reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration remains committed to reforming government processes through innovation, transparency, and people-first policies. It also demonstrates the visionary leadership of the Minister of Interior, Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whose relentless drive for modernization, alongside the commendable execution by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), continues to reshape how Nigerians at home and abroad, access critical services, setting a new standard for public service delivery.
Nigerians online have been celebrating the development; X user @Lollylarry1 posted: “Good News 1: Contactless passport for Nigerians in JAMAICA kickstarts today, APRIL 14TH, 2025. AVAILABLE ON Google Play. Courtesy of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.”
From Nigeria, @iamjustUstaz shared his excitement: “Hello Nigerians. The new Contactless Biometric Passport Enrolment is by your doorstep for Nigerians in US. JAMAICA & MEXICO are next. Surely, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo is not joking when he said Nigeria shall move forward always.”
Another user, @EleSpecial23, acknowledged the scale and impact:”8 countries and still counting. Well done to the team pulling this off, for Nigeria.”
Echoing that, @AkindimejiO urged fellow Nigerians to act fast:”The contactless biometric passport is now fully operational in the US, Jamaica, Brazil and Mexico. Nigerians in those countries should take full advantage of this opportunity for their passport renewals.”
Meanwhile, @AbuAbdulHameed7 (Prince of Arewa) added a helpful user tip: “Nigerians in USA, Jamaica, Mexico & Brazil should take note, the contactless is only available on Google Playstore, while iOS users will soon be enabled. Those in Canada, UK, Ireland & others are already enjoying the sweet experience.”
The process allows Nigerians to apply and complete their biometric captures remotely, skipping in-person visits to embassies. With its success already proven in Canada and the UK, this latest expansion proves Nigeria is forging ahead with citizen-focused reforms.
