Flood blocks Lafia-Makurdi road ahead of Tinubu’s arrival in Benue
Severe flooding has rendered the Lafia-Makurdi road impassable, complicating logistics ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Benue state.
The Lafia-Makurdi route, a major artery linking Benue to neighbouring states, is a key access point for travellers and government officials, including members of the presidential advance team.
The disruption comes as the state prepares to receive the president, who is visiting in response to recent attacks in Guma LGA, where over 100 residents were killed by suspected criminal herders.
The road, which also serves as a critical supply and transport corridor, was flooded following hours of heavy rainfall. Commuters have reported long delays and vehicles trapped in waterlogged sections of the highway.
The flooding raises concerns about the movement of security and logistical personnel accompanying the president, who is expected to meet with traditional rulers, political and religious leaders, and victims of the recent violence.
According to a statement on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Tinubu postponed his Kaduna visit to prioritise Benue.
The president aims to commiserate with the state government and families affected by the violence.
A town hall meeting with stakeholders is expected during the visit as part of efforts to promote dialogue and identify long-term solutions to the violence.
