FG declares public holidays for Christmas, New Year celebrations

The federal government has declared December 25, 26 and January 1, 2026, as public holidays.

The holidays are to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and the New Year celebrations respectively.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, announced the holidays on Monday in a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, the ministry’s permanent secretary.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility and sacrifice associated with the birth of Jesus Christ.

He also implored citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity, to use the festive period to pray for peace, security and national progress.

The minister further advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious during the celebrations, while wishing them a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
