Kano road crash kills 21 in head-on collision

A devastating road crash has claimed the lives of 21 people along the Zaria-Kano expressway, after a commercial bus reportedly drove against traffic and slammed into an oncoming truck.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the fatal accident occurred around 8:20 a.m. on Sunday at Kasuwar Dogo, in the Dakatsale area of Kano State. According to the FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the incident involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a DAF truck.

β€œPreliminary investigations reveal the crash was caused by the bus driver’s route violation,” Ogungbemide said. β€œHe drove against traffic and collided head-on with the truck.”

Of the 24 people involved, 21 died on the spotβ€”19 adult males and two adult femalesβ€”while three others sustained injuries. Emergency teams rushed to the scene to aid victims and restore traffic flow.

The remains of the deceased have been taken to a nearby mortuary, with rescue personnel working alongside other emergency responders to clear the wreckage.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has extended condolences to the families of the victims and issued a strong warning to motorists, especially commercial drivers and truck operators, about the deadly consequences of traffic violations.

He urged road users to report reckless driving through the FRSC mobile app, toll-free number 122, or any FRSC patrol unit.

β€œThe corps remains committed to enforcing traffic laws and educating the public to prevent these senseless tragedies,” Ogungbemide added.
